Deck Costs: What to Include in Your Budget

Deck costs include more than the visible boards. A useful budget describes the deck's size, height, supporting structure, access and finishing details so the whole job can be priced.

Describe the deck you want to use

Draw the proposed shape and approximate dimensions. Add doors, steps and the furniture you want on it. Note whether it replaces an existing deck or creates a new outdoor area.

Our landscaping in Wellington guide helps establish the use before the size. Two decks with the same area can involve different work if one is close to the ground and the other needs a more involved structure and access arrangement.

Record what is included in the quote and what is to be supplied separately. Discuss any design or approval costs before comparing totals.

Check what the site adds

Photograph the delivery route, side access and level changes. Carrying materials through a house or along a narrow path is different from placing them beside the work area. Existing structures and services may also influence how the work is organised.

On a sloping site, show the low side as well as the doorway. The deck consent guide helps you prepare questions about possible falls, barriers and planning requirements.

Compare product and scope choices separately

If you want to compare materials, ask for each option against the same deck design. Check whether a different product requires different framing, fixings or finishing. Include its ongoing care in your decision as well as the initial supply price.

Keep optional additions separate from the core scope. For example, compare the complete deck first, then discuss whether a seating feature or adjacent landscaping belongs in this stage.

Prepare the quote request

Send the sketch, site photographs, preferred materials and an inclusion list. Mark unknowns and ask what needs checking before a firm scope can be agreed. Use our quote comparison worksheet to record allowances and exclusions.

Our Wellington deck builders can discuss the project around your home, its access and your plans for the space. A complete brief makes that conversation more useful than a board-only price comparison.
