Timber vs Composite Decking: What to Compare

Timber and composite decking offer different appearances and care routines. We can discuss your preferred finish alongside the deck's design, access and installation needs so you compare complete options.

Start with the space and the product

Decide how the deck will be used before choosing the boards. Consider bare feet, dining furniture, the route from inside and the places that stay shaded or exposed. Our landscaping in Wellington guide puts that choice within the whole outdoor project.

Compare named products in your project notes, including the timber species and finish or the composite board profile. Material categories alone do not tell you the cleaning method, fixing detail or finished appearance.

Keep the instructions for the selected board and any coating together. Both choices need care; the useful comparison is the routine for the product you intend to install.

Try samples where the deck will be

  • View samples beside the house cladding and door frame.
  • Compare them in sun and shade, including their surface temperature before touching.
  • Look at the colour and texture when dry and wet.
  • Ask about slip-performance information for the intended use.
  • Check how cut ends, borders and steps will be finished.

A small sample helps with appearance, but it cannot show every condition on a completed deck. Include the full layout and site exposure in the discussion.

Compare a complete installed scope

Ask for each material option against the same proposed deck, with any changes to framing, fixings or finishing clearly identified. Keep steps, barriers, removal and access in both comparisons. Our deck cost checklist helps prevent a board-only comparison from leaving out necessary work.

Add the care products and maintenance tasks you expect to use over time. Choose the balance of appearance, routine care and project scope that suits your household, rather than relying on a universal lifespan or price claim.

Bring your shortlist to us

Prepare your deck sketch, site photographs, two or three material samples and the care instructions that matter to you. Mark the details you want to discuss, such as visible fixings, edge treatment or retaining an existing structure.

Our Wellington deck builders can discuss those preferences with the layout and site conditions. Tell us what you want the deck to feel like in daily use so the material discussion supports the whole project.
