Decide before you dismantle
Start with the layout, fixture schedule and finish selections. Confirm who supplies each item and check dimensions against the design. A late change to a shower tray or vanity can affect work that was already planned around another product.
For our Wellington bathroom renovations, tell us about your preferred timing and any fixed household commitments early. Use the bathroom budget checklist to settle inclusions at the same time as the scope.
Bathroom renovation timeline: plan the stages
- Preparation: finalise selections, responsibilities and any required approvals.
- Ordering: confirm availability and delivery dates for the actual products.
- Removal: isolate the work area and reveal the surfaces underneath old fittings.
- Building and services: complete the relevant preparation and plumbing or electrical work.
- Waterproofing and finishes: follow the specified system and its curing requirements.
- Fit-off and completion: install fittings, check the finished work and agree return to use.
Some tasks depend on others being complete and checked. Ask which milestones are fixed, which are provisional and what could change the sequence.
Protect the critical handovers
Confirm that materials are on site or have reliable delivery arrangements before the trades who need them arrive. Ask who checks delivered items for damage and correct size. Store fragile fittings where they will stay dry and protected.
Drying and curing periods are part of the work. Product instructions and project inspections can determine when the next trade can start. Avoid scheduling the first shower simply by counting days from demolition.
Arrange life without the room
If this is your only bathroom, agree a workable alternative before the room goes out of service. Ask about the points when water or power may be interrupted, and whether access through the house will change.
Make a household calendar with three entries: when the room closes, how changes to the programme will be communicated, and what must be completed before it reopens. Our guide to living at home during renovation helps you plan facilities and separation from the work.
Agree what completion means
Walk through the room with a written list. Check the agreed fittings and finishes, note anything outstanding and collect the care information for the installed products. Confirm when sealants and other finishes are ready for normal use.
Bring us your room photos, scope and timing constraints. We can discuss the sequence around your project and the decisions you can make early to keep it moving.
